My name is Pinky Redd. My pronouns are she/her.
I am a domestic violence survivor.
I have been homeless many times.
I had days where I worried about how I would eat & feed my children.
I have struggled with my finances, depression & anxiety.
I am a ally & I have children in the LGBTQ+ community.
I have dedicated my efforts to supporting underserved pregnant women and mothers with children under 5 through a nonprofit agency, offering resources and advocacy through in-home visits. Additionally, I served as a therapeutic foster care mom, providing a secure environment for displaced children in collaboration with a nonprofit organization.
As the Founder I bring over three decades of expertise in customer service, conflict resolution, team building, time management, budgeting, strategic planning, marketing, branding, communications, human resource management, relationship building, financial management, leadership, and decision-making.
For years, I was unsure of my calling. I have had several successful businesses: a proven hair growth product line that allows me to connect with women worldwide, an award-nominated international marketing firm and fleet of trucks nationwide. Despite these successful business ventures, I still felt like something was missing. I love reading hair growth stories. I love interacting with clients and users of my marketing services. I love meeting new people and hearing about the people my truck drivers have met. All of my businesses have enriched my life tremendously but I still felt like there was something missing. I reached out to God and asked “what do you want me to do for your kingdom?”
I realized my calling was to help others that have experienced or currently experiencing the things I have experienced and everyone in between. In 2020 began to feed the unhoused and others in need before BUTC was founded. I call them my “friends.”
I get so excited when we go feed our "friends." It makes me happy to give to someone in need. It feels good to uplift, encourage and be there for others. There is a stigma behind the words "homeless people". I prefer to call them my "friends” because everyone needs one. I don't like to say "poverty.” I prefer to say challenges because everyone has them. If I want to help the community I have to see the community as if everyone has or will overcome their challenges.
In 2023 I started Teen Money Talk Financial Literacy Workshops. In 2024 We branched out to Houston Texas and added a mentorship program. Teaching teens about personal finances, and financial literacy in a way that they could related, stay engaged and learn has been a very rewarding experiences for everyone involved. We also teach the teens conflict resolution, life skills, discuss furthering their education, career choices and entrepreneurship.
In 2024 we will launch our new program.
Building Up The Community (BUTC) mental health program, we will provide accessible and affordable mental health services to youth, teens, adults, and families facing socio-economic challenges. Our committed team of licensed clinicians, care coordinators, and volunteers, under the leadership of an experienced mental health director, is dedicated to nurturing resilient families and communities, thereby reshaping the conversation surrounding mental wellness.
When you are experiencing a hardship of any kind the last thing you want to do is feel worse when seeking help. I want a safe place for people to come to for some help, support, a listening ear, safety, resources, financial support, mental health services, financial education, food, a meal, learn how to start a business, seek employment, volunteer and more.
My mission for Building Up The Community Inc is to make an impact in underserved and disadvantaged communities by having a place the Brown and Black community can come get the resources they need to better their lives. To be treated with respect. To have people to listen to their concerns and help to the best of our ability. To not be judged but show compassion & love. To improve their quality of life.
Building Up The Community Inc will make an impact in at least one person's life each and everyday.
We are building a better tomorrow today for so many who don't see any hope or even see a way.
My promise to every donor, sponsor, board member, volunteer, staff, friend, member and anyone else is to use all monies, supplies, equipment and any other resources donated to better the lives of the people we service through our many programs we offer.
Even though I'm still healing, because healing is an ongoing process, it's time for me to let my journey help and heal others.
I can't help anyone by shining the light on the issue but I can help them by shining the light on the solution.
Even though it is not clear yet, everything I need to help the community is on the way.
